Job-Hunter’s Guide to Summer Socializing


It’s officially started. Long weekends, and backyard BBQs.  And for job hunters, patties are typically served up with this question, “You want cheese on that burger and hey, how’s that job hunt coming? Any luck?”

Anyone looking for work in the GTA or Canada can pretty much count on being grilled, as much as their dinner, by well-meaning friends, family, and neighbours.

All of the following techniques been used successfully by those who have been where you are today  — in line for ketchup and a new job, be it full-time, contract, and/or temporary.

Answer questions about your job search with a story: 

Ira Glass, host of the popular show This American Life, is known to say, “Great stories happen to those who can tell them.” And when you’re looking for work opportunities, you’ve got a great story to tell.  

A job search really is a journey. You meet all kinds of people, pursue all kinds of avenues, and find yourself thinking about all kinds of possibilities, on your way to landing a work opportunity.

Tell people about it, and you’ll find they will be genuinely interested.  We all love stories about a journey to get from here to somewhere we want to be.

2 reasons why this technique is powerful:

Answer a question about how your job search is going with a positive story about your efforts, and something strange happens.  All of the sudden, you aren’t talking about what you don’t have (a job), but instead you’re recounting an adventure of sorts.

If you make the story how you’re going after getting a job you want, you become a source of inspiration.  And the fact is that everyone looks for a new job opportunity at some point in their life, often more than once.  Your story of your job hunt, and how you’re handling it, is relevant and interesting to people.

According to Hopi wisdom, “Those who tell the stories rule the world.”  You can be sure that, “Those who tell the stories rule the BBQ.”

Turn the tables.  Ask how their work is going: 

You can get a lot of mileage out of answering a question about your job search by saying something like, “Looking for work has its rewards. I’ve been learning a lot about the industry, what I can do, and how to roll with change. How is your work going?

2 reasons why this technique is powerful: 

You’re instantly letting someone know that you’re growing, you’re learning, you are developing insight, skills, wisdom.  All strong positive messages that can turn a conversation into a contact for you.

You’re getting someone to talk about their work which gives you a chance to listen for any potential opportunities for you.

Deflect:  Did you hear about So and So?

Make the point that just about every successful person has done all kinds of different types of jobs. Try something like, ““I’m looking into all kind of possibilities. You know, career paths twist and turn, and you just never know.  George Clooney used to be an insurance salesman.  And Angelina Jolie applied to be a funeral director.”

2 reasons why this technique works:

You are conveying optimism and showing openness.  That sells people.

It inspires people to mention opportunities which they might not otherwise have thought would be of interest to you. Temp work is a case in point.
